Jesus Is Not Your Guru

What if the way we think about Jesus has been subtly, quietly wrong all along? In this message drawn from Matthew 16:13-19, we are confronted with one of the most penetrating questions ever asked: Who do you say Jesus is? Not who does culture say He is, not what label feels comfortable or convenient, but who do we actually believe Him to be at the deepest level of our lives? The message challenges us to examine whether we have unknowingly reduced Jesus to a life coach, a moral guru, or a spiritual self-help resource. When we do that, we place ourselves at the center of the story and relegate Jesus to a supporting role in our own narrative. The geography of this passage turns out to matter enormously. Jesus asks this defining question not in a synagogue or a safe religious setting, but in Caesarea Philippi, a place saturated with pagan worship, dark spiritual activity, and what ancient people believed was a literal gateway to the underworld. It is in that setting, standing before the rock face where false gods were worshipped and sacrifices were made, that Peter declares Jesus to be the Christ, the Son of the living God. The location is not incidental. It is a declaration made in the teeth of darkness, and it changes everything. This message invites us to stop treating our faith as a pat Sunday school answer and start wrestling with whether we carry a genuine, living revelation of who Jesus truly is.
